Topic:Role of oxidative stress in cardiovascular disease outcomes following exposure to ambient air pollution

Abstract

Exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. These are manifested through several, likely overlapping, pathways including at the functional level, endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, pro-coagulation and alterations in autonomic nervous system balance and blood pressure. At numerous points within each of these pathways, there is potential for cellular oxidative imbalances to occur. The current review examines epidemiological, occupational and controlled exposure studies and research employing healthy and diseased animal models, isolated organs and cell cultures in assessing the importance of the prooxidant potential of air pollution in the development of cardiovascular disease outcomes.

Abstract

The functional quality of an aquatic ecosystem is a reflection of the health of the environment. Therefore, the present study evaluates the trace metal contamination (Pb, Cd, Ni and Mn) of water and aquatic macrophytes in Asa, Agba, Unilorin and Sobi (Moro) earthen dams, north central Nigeria to evaluate the level of anthropogenic impact on the immediate environment.

Abstract:

A multi-pollutant modelling framework for England and Wales is described. This includes emissions of nitrate, phosphorus and sediment to water and ammonia, methane and nitrous oxide to air, and has been used to characterise baseline (no uptake of on-farm measures) and business-as-usual (BAU) annual pollutant losses, comparing these with the loss under a range of new policies aimed at increasing the uptake of relevant source control measures to 95% across England and Wales. Microbial pollution of surface waters in agricultural catchments can be a consequence of poor farm management practices, such as excessive stocking of livestock on vulnerable land or inappropriate handling of manures and slurries. Catchment interventions such as fencing of watercourses, stream side buffer strips and constructed wetlands have the potential to reduce faecal pollution of watercourses. However these interventions are expensive and occupy valuable productive land. There is, therefore, a requirement for tools to assist in the spatial targeting of such interventions to areas where they will have the biggest impact on water quality improvements whist occupying the minimal amount of productive land. SCIMAP is a risk-based model that has  purpose but with a focus on diffuse sediment and nutrient pollution been developed for this

 Experimental Investigation on Large-scale Slender FRP-Concrete-Steel Double-Skin Tubular Columns Subjected to Eccentric Compression

Abstract: FRP-Concrete-Steel Double-Skin Tubular Columns (DSTCs) are a new form of hybrid columns which effectively combines the advantages of the constituent materials. A DSTC consists of an outer fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube and an inner steel tube with the gap between filled with concrete. This paper presents the firstever large-scale tests on slender DSTCs subjected to eccentric compression. The major parameters examined include the load eccentricity and the confinement stiffness of the FRP tube. Test results show that slender DSTCs possess good ductility under eccentric compression. Larger load eccentricity results in lower axial load capacity and higher deformability; larger confinement stiffness of the FRP tube results in larger axial load capacity and deformability. The axial strain distribution of a DSTC section subjected to eccentric compression generally conforms to the plane section assumption, but the ultimate axial strain of concrete is increased as a result of eccentric compression.
